On the other side of the world
God cries more tears of shame.
Beneath the land gorges on the deluge,
Regurgitating the excess when its hunger’s assuaged.
Flood, pestilence, hunger and misery abound,
The mournful wails of the beleaguered parents
Are drowned out by the shrieking children
Who clutch at the dishevelled clothing of the adults
Begging for food, some shelter, some respite from their abasement.

The fat cats in their citadels of power flap their gums,
Issuing the regular clamour for help, assistance;
Their only living hell a press that attacks their lethargy;
Their inaction to help or provide for their own.
They do not need to beg for food, just ring a bell
And as if by magic the richest delicacies arrive on ornate platters,
Wine, the life blood of their people sipped from cut crystal.
Opulent carpets protect their feet from the marble floors
Whilst in the fields the barefoot poor scrabble through the putrid mud.

Where are the stock piles of provisions, medicines and shelter?
Unprepared for disaster, the only thing assured in this hell-hole.
Why when this miserable anniversary of death is inflicted annually
Is nothing ever in place to help the suffering, the lost ones?
The pictures of their plight reach the whole world and thank goodness,
Not God or the bureaucrats that charity still exists upon this globe.
In the modern world this situation should not be allowed to happen.
For those in power the blight on the landscape is not the disaster itself
But their own people, wretched and pleading for deliverance who vex them.

Once again it will be the charity and goodwill of others who will save them.
The situation will die down and conveniently go away,
The castles and the rich inside will stay filled with riches in peaceful negligence
And denial of the continued plight of the ordinary populace.
The West and East will keep their reputations and positions intact
While administering to the multitudes of the sick and the needy.
Empty promises of preparation for the future will be banded around
But in the countryside the masses will continue to hold their breath and wait.
For next year will be the same and the suffering will return once more.

The Floods.
