the day that finally arrived
I'd been avoiding you
my fear of death. To myself, I lied
the nurse said something kind
a warning shot, a weight I never bore
before I came in, I barely listened
I hesitated as she walked me to your door
I walked through, desperately painted on smile
doorknob in hand, fearfully facing forward
and then I turned my head, slowly, knowing
and there you were, what was left of you, awkward
a grotesque insult to the human form
that decimated creature was all your desperation left
you lived as long as the human form would let you
your children mattered most. lost, numb, bereft
I could see through your skin, features drawn to breaking point
I felt sick. Embarrassed, incapable and wrong
what could I do? Fear of a different you
you scared me beyond fear, though you were strong
I tried to crack a joke, but you were delirious
I was thankful for that as I saw my own weakness and fear
I finally learned what a coward I am.
For the moments that followed, I dreaded time. Nothing was clear. A lot of emotion here. What a great way to deal with hard events in life. Keep it up, it's definitely a great release!

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
