Society resented, threatened the young couple with pain;
They sneaked past the norms, defied the rigid rules,
And Ran Away, only to be mocked as fools
For they discovered it had been mere Lust
That now coated their Honour with a layer of rust:
They returned as prodigals – hatred had marked the days
They’d spent together – and conformed to Society’s Ways.

The Man informed them of the amends he’d make;
The Society shrugged it off as a forgivable mistake
And so was he admitted back to Honour’s fold
From where his past Stain none could behold.
Then he married, and began his life anew:
‘All’s now fair with him’ was the Society’s view.
He became of those Family Men the Society respects,
Whose past and present Mistakes, the Society neglects.

But, oh, hear of the Woman who felt so totally used,
After the broken relationship, she was bleared and bruised.
Remorseful was she, but moved about with downcast eyes
For the Society refused to forgive her Great Vice:
Excluded, cast out, hated – she was an object of Disgrace;
And the good within her, none could now embrace.
Society thus sentenced her to a life of disdain,
Just like the other Women who carry with them the Stain.

They refuse to perish, for they are revered as something mighty;
They’re praised and venerated, these double standards of society.

Amman...

I can't think of a word or phrase to express feelings this poem leaves with me. Because I have a high functioning form of Aspergers Syndrome, I have never been able to find security in a social structure; belonging to a "herd;" a group of look-a-likes and do-a-likes. As a kid I didn't understand it and hated it. But now that I am able to comprehend the lethal compromises I would have had to make in order to belong to a socially homogenous group; to be in possession of a "group identity," I consider my "Self" to be blessed. Instead of an external system of security, I have an internal system of security, and therefore, it really doesn't matter what anyone else thinks! I know what I think and that is all that matters.

The song, Life is Beautiful, is about this. When we finally realize all it is that we are, that point of realization is the seed for being able to Love our Self Unconditionally regardless of what some external social order assaults us with. This whole dilemma makes me wonder why others are unable to see this...and why a certain few are able to...

Great write...it hurts and leaves me aching for the Lady; I empathize; I've had three failed relationships, but I learned from all three...like all good poetry, your poem is the beginning of a path on which my thoughts will travel for some time...

Thanks,
Blessings,
