Flimsy standing in a row,
Looking up at the high rise blocks that look down
At the people rushing to and fro,
All hurrying to within themselfs
Behind their own front doors
That in their thickness hide
The pimps, the pushers and the whores.

The old man in his basement flat
Can still remember the days
When the streets outside were safe to walk
And people kind and polite in their ways.
And in a dingy bed sit
A young girl sits and sighs
Staring blankly at the cradle
Where her screaming baby lays.

And in a seedy back street pub
Just sitting at the bar
Is a broken winded young man
Who's habit has gone too far,
He nods at me I shake my head
And I turn around to go
Back to matchbox house on the manic street
Where the high rise towers glow. [comments] => 1 [counter] => 91 [topic] => 21 [informant] => cashfan1 [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 0 [associated] => [topicname] => Lifepoems )

And a very interesting snapshot too. In Nottingham you can see the effects of a similar change. I also remember going through some god-awful anonymous place on the way to Birmingham airport, which seemed to consist entirely of high-rise blocks and council estates.

I think they call that...development?
