Beneath a thunderous sky.
Every muscle, every joint seared by a system
Turning on itself, determined to self harm.
I glimpse a smallness, a small remembrance,
A shadow chasing shadows
Across the hallowed halls of my mind.
A tiny light reflected in the lens of a twitching eye.
The patch is small, square and sticky with substance.
I press it hard to my arm, morphine is a dangerous promise.
And already it is denying pain a definition,
The sky is lightening with dawn at the outer fringes
And now I am chasing all shadows away
To the water fall of imagination where they land with a splash,
Filtered by stone and rocks they tumble away. For now.
The air is lighter softening the rough edge of suffering
And I slip easily into the welcome arms of relief,
A chemical indulgence fast becoming a need.
So here I am sleepy with a hazy joy,
Pain free. For now. You write about a real life topic with such aesthetically pleasing elements such as the waterfall and the tumbling rocks. You show how much the pain takes a toll on the mind, body, and soul and also describe how it dangerous to use chemicals for relief even it is a necessity. Great poem. I hope your pain stays away. You have a true talent as a poet.

A most frightening place to be...when such a small action can bring such relief.

Love the way you "painted" the picture of pain and then so graphically, the depth of that relief.

A wonderful read no doubt!
Blessings

Dennis is this most hurtful to read. I'm so sorry that you must suffer so! I've had 8 surgeries in my life, but knew that soon the pain would go away. As a poet you describe your suffering so perfectly, and after reading the first part, I felt your complete relief. You are a Word Master, and I only pray that you don't get any worse with time.
I'm so very sorry dear friend.
Warm love
consue

Hi Dennis,

Bear up, my friend.

A well written piece - sincere and vividly
descriptive.

Tommy
