~ John Greenleaf Whittier

Night caves in with sweet obsession
Collapsing stars in silent flight
While love’s complaint persuades depression
To echo with the morning’s light

Sleep does not near with pleasant dreams
It tugs and essays a tortured heart
All failed songs that tie no strings
And rip the ocean’s tide apart

Love and all thoughts ever after
Shall lie mute when unattended
Even hope, like vanished laughter
Becomes love’s frailty; a poison blended

Spirit of love, why so cruel
When faith and generous hearts remain?
Why do you assault renewal
And harbour only the dust of pain?

Memories collide with swift advance
Ushering the silent grave
And break the beautiful hand of chance
Now lost inside a crashing wave

Sweet, yet sweeter still its mystery
Love that yields to unknown force
Does not dare to repeat history
Or follow any carved out course

Once tasted, the flavour blends
With every spice that danced across
The open tongue that breathes and mends
A hearts last hope that has been lost

And thus, so flies the happy hour
That held a soul in easy grip
Never to lose the edge of power
While into nothingness the heart does slip

What a beautiful start to a poem, that first verse is gold in poetry terms, then the sadness of questioning and building futility takes my heart to the depths, pivotal line for me,spirit of love why so cruel?written with such a depth of sensitivity, though sad a shere joy to read.

Nothing is something, so while the heart may slip there, I believe it will always come back.

This is so torridly sad I wanted to cry. I don't do that too easily but I could feel the tears with their desire to form.

Another perfect example of great passionate poetry.

this is absolutely wonderful. Deep, full of meaning and although a certain sadness, that sadness is well expressed. Really great writing, thanks for sharing.

WOW!!!

Unfolded as though from a long ago fairytale.
I adore it and find inspiration between the lines and especially from the imagery created with your words.
Bravo!!

Hi,

This is quite simply a masterpiece of verse.
Superb style, sweet melancholy, and the words
softly dancing in each line. Each time I visit your
page I could easily be fooled into believing that
I've stumbled on undiscovered words from the
pens of the immortals. And I do not say this
lightly.

Splendid!

Tommy

Wow that's a very beautifully written poem. I'd like to achieve that level of writing. I agree that a person cannot control their heart in that you may a love a thing that is bad for you a hate a thing which is good for you. But I don't believe in chane as in luck but I believe in the divine predecree of God. So that's the only bone of contention but once again beatifully
written and mostly true In regard to the agony of heartache

ENCORE! ENCORE! ENCORE! Marie, that's pure Genius, and always so enjoyable to read!
I loved most of all your last line. "While into nothingness the heart does slip" I remember the frustation, and grief as my heart did dip!
You are so right, it's like losing a firm grip!
Marvelous, dear............thank you so much for sharing this with us. What a treat!
I could relate to this, but especially when my house burned to the ground. There was a nothingness that still can't be found. I search for recipes to this day..........that were suddenly taken away..........forever and a day!
Warm love
