Like a great overcoat, snug within snugness.
The room is alive with shadows and flames within shadows
That walk the cieling and the oak floor
Where I sit in sagging comfort of the armchair.
The whisky I drink is a hellfire and brimstone preacher,
But how I love his fiery sermon, the liquid gold of words
Flowing over tongune, coating throat
And my belly murmurs a soft satisfaction.
Through a crack in the curtains the porch light cast a picture
Of lawn and trees framed by gently falling snow.
And at the sky's edge a half moon is tempting stars
With a suductive glance.
And still the logs burn, the flames dance,
A fine ballet performed on the great hearth,
The fluting tune of wind in the chimney breast
Caps a perfect performance.
I watch the shadows on the wall, private within flame,
Mesmerised by the performance, silent.
Through the gap in the curtain I catch another glance,
The snow is falling still, the stars edging toward oblivion
And I put another log on the fire, the flames roar,
I wrap myself closer in the great coat of the burning logs. Fantastic ! Your poem echoes something we all have felt sometime of the other and love... !

Nothing like a warm, snug winter fire :) Reminiscent of great times and close to the heart moments of pleasure
A very vivid and comforting poem.Very well done friend !! Bless you.

Hi Dennis,

Excellent! I can hear the logs crackling, I can taste
the whiskey (Scotch, I hope?), I can feel myself
smarming at the icy discomfort outside the
window - and all because you brought it alive
with this wonderful rendering.

Tommy

I agree with our fellow poet Spud.
How wonderfully you have "painted" the canvas and taken the reader on a beauitfully.cosy journey with your words.
Everything about me settled into the snugness of this piece as I read, awaiting each line, and I would have been happy for it to continue on lol...soothing as a lullaby.
Bravo!!
Blessings
LW
