I close my eyes and wonder what happened?
Two lovers, soul mates and friends, inseparable:
Who could finish each other’s conversation:
Whose merest touch produced the widest smile
And engender such a feeling of warmth of pleasure and excitation,
Which spiralled up the spine and radiated outwards to every extremity.

Stumbling now around in a mist of confusion,
I catch fleeting glimpses through the fog of places,
Times past when we were together and so happy.
In this place of mystification there appears to be no exit,
Just gaps replaying never-ending recurrences of agreeable adoration
And the mist becomes more dense and the images stronger.

We parted as friends as adults should do but is it true?
The hardest thing is to look into those adorable eyes,
That once burned with life and desire which now appear blank;
To hold conversation which is stilted, forced and not spontaneous.
Surely friends meet and greet with a smile and eyes alive,
Who laugh and joke without effort and can share all their problems.

The mist has not cleared and each time I see her,
The pain through my chest is so intense it forces tears,
To roll down my cheeks and my hands to clench.
One day I hope that this obfuscation will dissipate,
But till then each food or drink that we shared together
Merely brings down the clouds and I stagger around in torment.

The Mist of Separation.

Al, I feel the torment in this. It is raging, though disciplined. There is something about that title that just so settles inside one's soul...lingering with every anguished breath. This extreme outpouring of sorrow could break anyone who has ever been here. How do we endure such exquisite pain?

Well done, poet.

I loved the question your poem posed to the reader. Can you remain friends with someone you truly loved once the relationship has ended? Your absolutely correct, there does seem to be a sort of awkwardness when facing them again. Great job conveying your pain as well as your confusion.

Parting as "friends" in a relationship does add an awkward feeling to it. You//'//re asking if it//'//s true. I feel it//'//s not true and it//'//s an agreement to remain civil. At least that//'//s what my experience has been.

I can definitely, however, relate to this exceptional write.

Thank you,

Dugan
