ASHTRAY
The cigarette waivers above the ashtray,
Ash hanging from the end defying physics,
Refusing to fall of its own accord into the receptacle beneath.
I look at the hand, gnarled with age, slightly shaking,
Then transfer my gaze to the face of the owner.
It is one of seniority, experience and tiredness.
Bespectacled eyes stare blankly at the immaculate roll-up.
What goes through that mind and that has seen so much?
The level of noise in the bar surrounds and engulfs us
But the man is oblivious to all around him.
Does he ponder his youth, his life, his loves?
Who knows? Nobody asks and he sits alone,
Staring into the glass ashtray as if seeking guidance.
Nobody intrudes into this silent reverie and still,
The ash remains dangling from the cigarette.
Almost despondently the ash is despatched to the ashtray.
His eyes focus and the face changes imperceptibly.
Once more he engages in conversation and badinage,
Yet still, behind the facade, the eyes reflect sadness.
A brief moment in time glimpsed, much seen yet nothing revealed.

Observing or people watching is a great pastime and you have taken the reader on a detailed descriptive journey looking into the life of another......a brief moment in time glimpsed...well written |
