Velvet skies

Velvet skies are draped lazily upon us
The wind is cold but swerves around you
Your hair flies back from the icy breeze
And your brown eyes look into my pale blue
Starlight shines down above you, spotlight
I bask in your splendor and you smile sweetly
The moon is jealous, all eyes are on you
And as you shake your dress discreetly
I hesitantly wander forward, my eyes to the ground
Trying eagerly to break this awkward silence
When from your lips escapes a sound
A thank you for the evening and a smile
I smile in rebuttal but raise my head and sigh
I stare at every individual star, and the moon
Then back to you, and laugh at the sky
You look at me with quizzical smirk
To which I just shake my head and grin
I stare deep into your eyes and state clearly
“What am I thinking? Where to begin…?
These stars are all in awe of you, the moon, more so
For the brightest thing which shines tonight
Are not the countless rocks in the sky and space
But the beauty standing here in my sight
Countless years men have dreamed of the stars
Begging for a single touch of their life goal
Whereas all this time, more beautiful things
Are so much closer yet harder to hold”
You’re look is unfazed, not processing the words
I smile and sigh once more, and get closer still
I look into your eyes, surprise filling them
And gather up all my courage and will
My lips collide with yours, widening your eyes
They slowly close as you gently push back
Fluttering open, your eyelids reveal brown orbs
Sparkling slightly in the midnights’ light and glow
I kiss you softly again on the cheek and grin
You lean back and the red on your face shows
Your smile is sweet and soft hands caress mine
You lower your head, resting it on my shoulder
You nuzzle it quickly and whisper in my ear
“Will you love me when you’re older?
Will you continue to hold me the way you are now?”
Without a second to think, I instantly replied “yes”
“But how do you know?” You retorted “how?”
I replied without a trace of hesitation or regret
“You are the light that the moon reflects upon me
And you set it alight every morning, creating day
You are all I hear, all I want, and all I need and see
The reason I live, breathe and awake from sleep
My everything in which to exchange sweet nothing
My eternal reason to try harder and harder
To finally become someone and be something
I forever long to be loved by you, so please, be calm
I will await your feelings in the safety of my dreams
Where your love and care will always be mine
Though for only a while, no matter how long it seems
Every second, every minute, every hour…
I will count each one with a different breath, thinking
Of your smile, your embrace and your beauty
And your voice, as I remain breathing and blinking
For this itself is but a dream, a made up fairy tale
I have never confessed these things with real tongue
As I myself don’t truly understand what I feel
Due to lack of experience, or am I too young?
I’ll awake in the morning, and fail to tell you this
Every single thought I have for you, my dear
Though the words from my lips would hurt you
As they are unworthy to reach your petite ears
But I’ll try harder to become a man,
A closer example of perfection in your eye
And every time I look at the stars, thinking of you
I’ll think of everything you mean and although I cry
I smile at the thought of yours, and fall asleep again
Ready to repeat this vicious loop of obsession
And maybe when you’re with me again
You will finally be able to hear this confession”
I pushed you away, silver tears ran down your face
You disappeared slowly into midnight, sighing
You joined those stars in that velvet sky
And I watched you sparkle and continued crying
Maybe one day I will be with you, only time can tell
I play with the grass where you once stood
Your scent still lingers in the air above it…
Maybe my silence is for the greater good?
Why burden you with my childish thoughts?
When I’ll inevitably lose to a greater man?
But I shall take advantage of what I have
And hold you near to me when I can
I wake up once again, with the memory of your face
Your smile lingering in my frail mind, beaming
I smile yet once again a tear trails down my cheek
At the realization that I was only dreaming.
