Array ( [sid] => 15751 [catid] => 1 [aid] => Mick [title] => Say Farewell This Way [time] => 2003-04-11 06:35:00 [hometext] => My thoughts, concerning my friends, who may feel obligated by our customary traditions, to sacrifice their time and finances to honor me. [bodytext] => I don't plan to leave this world right away,
but I have some last wishes
I hope you'll remember someday.
Our customs change through cultures and time
and I've come to hope for things done this way.

These last wishes, I emplore of you;
don't take leave of your work day
or cut short the family holiday...
to sit at my funeral
or stand by my graveside
to show your respect for me...
Grieve for me whenever
and however you would,
for releasing your pain is good,
but, remember, please,...
your love for me cannot be proved
by gazing at my body of flesh that lays dead.

Let your tribute to me be during my life,...
you've meant so much to me,...
so, I'd be honored to be remembered
when you chat with friends over coffee or tea.
Think of me when you hear the breeze
as it whispers through the leaves of your tree.
Think of me in the sunshine and
in the song that you sing.
Think of me when the flowers bloom;
place one in your window for me.
Don't spend your hard-earned money
on a frivolous funeral array.
When you want to say
'Hello' or 'Good-bye,'
just stop by my grave
when you come my way,
or...
when you look into a babbling brook,...
or...
into the blue heavens
where light clouds are floating.
My grave does not require tending...
nor adorning of wreaths and sprays.
If you like,...
bring wild yellow sunflowers...
or some daisies you've picked by the way.

If you need to come there to see me...
for a place you can quietly pray,
rest on my stone over my body;
sort out your thoughts for the day.
Its no sin; its okay...
if you see me in body
as you think and you pray,...
but, please,...
don't worship that old flesh!...
Praise God! I'm not in it today!
If my life meant something to you,...
if I've helped you in any way,...
pass it on while your life you are living;
love a child,... touch a soul,...
give each day.
Whatever you've received from me,
you must give away.
My last wishes,... in love, I have given;
if you hear or not, I don't know.
I've planted the seeds.
By His grace through you,...
I pray,
what I've planted will continue to grow.

OMG. This touched me in so many ways.. It has a real "Do not stand at my grave and weep" feel to it. It is so beautiful.

Thank you, Sleepless, for the very complimentary comment on Say Farewell This Way.
Poetry.com has been unavailable to me for a few days and I really missed the interaction with my poetic friends! This is a great site!

I really liked this piece. Death is not an end but a beginning to something new and I certainly dont want anyone standing around a body that no longer holds my soul and crying.

All I can really say is wow. This a very beautiful poem and it really touched me. Because, that is what I told someone the day I had my wreck. She rushed to the hospital and said things very similar to her. I hope this touches others and they realize that anything you do can change someones life. What you may say today that meant nothing to you may mean everything in the world to someone and change their perspective on everything. Thank you for sharing this great poem with us.

Dear exiled, thank you for reading and commenting. I appreciate the feedback. I do believe our poetic verses can benefit a few others in this world. I hope thats what happens with mine anyway. Probably, there won't be many that read poetry, but even just one is worth doing it. Primarily, its value has been to me from my Lord, then if it can ripple out to other souls, I'm glad.
May God continue blessing souls thru you.

This was the most unselfish, loving, warm poem I have ever read. This is exactly what a true lover would say, and by lover, I mean someone who loves life and poeple unconditionally. I don't know where you are, who you are, or your age, but the wisdom here is eternal. Bless you.
