[bodytext] => Underneath the exit sign Friday afternoon her blue eyes meeting my innocuous questions, her laughter sputters and she slides a lock of hair behind her porcelain ear. She is forceful with demons behind desks as they play paperwork games with our common fate. I give my assent to all that administrators ask, then conspire to move the wheel my way. Her earliest kindness I mistrusted, thinking it could not be just for me. I courted her with creativity and lesson plans and colored pens. And on a day in summer, I smiled to her across the bobbing heads of silent students; and knew that I had reached a place where her indifference, if it came, would softly, surely break my heart.
