Array ( [sid] => 15713 [catid] => 1 [aid] => Mick [title] => The Way She Looks At Me [time] => 2003-04-07 21:05:00 [hometext] => a gig at the spittal with a 4 time cancer survivor-5th cancer is in the brain. baaaaaaaad day at work [bodytext] => the flaws of my assumptions
far too many to list
but let me share just one
so you may get the jist

the nature of my craft
sees me all 0ver town
in and out of lives
confidentiality is my crown

such was the case last night
a gig quite simple in theory
as i walked into the waiting room
my heart began to grow weary

young father and son
sat quietly in their chair
looking over at mom
her eyes begged me not to stare

saying hello with a smile
we greet for the very first time
not appearing awkward,
the only thing on my mind.

expecting to meet
a person of "normal health"
im sure the shock on my face
was anything but stealth.

when the doctor called us back
I felt weak in my knees
as she removed her hat,
she looked right at me.

as we sat alone
I asked of her illness
the silence was painful
so was the stillness.

soon she would tell me
she had brain cancer
so hard to hear
that kind of answer

she was getting radiation treatment
then decided to quit going
"the cancer has spread to my lungs"
she said in a tone that was knowing

"thats five different places
ive had more than enough"
just found out thanksgiving,
the last two months have been tough

then she went in with the doctor
next to her husband i would wait
packing down the emotion
with no real way to relate

we talked and we joked
till her exam was complete
but after the gig
as i walked down the street

i felt strong emotions
seizing my being
my soul cried out
with no way of fleeing

rushing straight home
to hold my dear wife
grateful to God
for all our Blessings in life
