brings with it a set of criteria
of what is expected

But now take a girl
who, up until now,
was never allowed to fall in love
but, once entering college,
was strangely granted permission
though she by now had immunity
a shield of mock cynicism
but though she takes a brave stance
she knows nothing.

And then, take a boy
who lived out his teenage years
focused on studies, no time for a love
yet, a hopeless romantic
watched every old hallmark movie
and put himself in the scenes
memorizing the script
but though he’s been dreaming
he knows nothing.

Couple this with a chilly, crisp night
the first day of November, with leaves falling ‘round
a dark tree-lined pathway, a clear full moon’s light

Not daring to think, yet overanalyzing
the closer they lean, the more terrified they become
their foreheads touch, a familiar position
but this time they don’t pull away.

they stare into each other’s eyes,
their breath becoming measured
then held
and suddenly, someone gives in
and ducks their head closer
his lips cover hers
and the waiting is over.

Terrified, terrified
all the visions come back
of old Hallmark movies
and couples they’d seen
they have now somehow sealed
the pact that joins them
with those “other people”
the ones he had envied
and she had scoffed at
the ones who are in love.

Wow, awesome poem, it was like watching a scene from one of those hallmark movies.

Dreams and memories of first kisses.
One day, hope to experience the thrill like this poem .
