Outback Whispers

Quite a long one...sorry peoples :)

Down a dusty outback stretch,of dirt between two towns
I walk within my thoughts,as I listen to the sounds
Of cows and sheep in the meadows, grazing on the grass
Soothing solitude devours me,time moves slowly past

Old gum trees of blonding bark, stand watching as I walk
So alone they stand in silence, yet I can hear them talk
They tell me of the many souls, ghosts of days gone by
That like myself, have travelled with their heart in heavy sigh

Come my child, they call to me,heed the stories to be told
Upon the breeze, wisdom rides, beckoning whispers unfold
I desert the dusty track, climb the paddock's faded rails
To rest before the memories,of ghostly outback tales

Cross legged in the sunshine, upon carpet of emerald green
Breathing in the fragrant air, cherry blossomed, crisp and clean
Tiny braids fall 'round my face,as I bow my head in thought
Waiting for the ghosts of old,I'm wanting to be taught

I look up to the blonde branches, they seem almost petrified
I hear the voice no longer,of the trees,in silence they now hide
So I stretch out in the heat of day, close my eyes and wonder why
The whispers that called me to this place, have now said goodbye

As my mind takes on the surroundings,my senses dance and flirt
Though my eyes are closed, still I see, ghosts upon the outback dirt
A swagman who had left his home, where he had lived since birth
To wander alone across barren plains, until his soul had fled the earth

Wee footprints from a childs step, paint the red dirt with his soul
His life was short, though far he walked,he was only 4 yrs old
His mother holds his little hand, clutches a baby to her breast
Disease had eaten most their tribe, taken them to their rest

A drover and his stock horse, came thundering into view
He paused a moment, looked at me,as though my thoughts he knew
Said"Lassie, theres a world out there,go and live your life"
"Keep your dreams,follow them,love with a heart that's light"

He then cracked the whip, whistled his dog, urged his horse into the haze
Rounded up his cattle, moved them onwards from where they grazed
As the dust had settled from his departure,my eyes beheld the sight
Of an old man kneeling on the ground, late in the dead of night

I watched him through my senses, felt the sadness there within
As he turned around to face me,I saw his tears fall past his chin
His eyes seemed like they pleaded, begging me to end his life
For he could'nt face another morn, without his departed wife

He cried out to her memory,"Please forgive my selfish ways"
"I never told you that I loved you,for our many nights and days"
"My heart was always yours,I'm nothing without you here"
Then as I reached my hand to him,he just up and disappeared

Something brought me back then,as I opened my eyes I saw
Nothing but the memories,of faded days before
Before I had come along, way before my birth
Many souls had wandered, across this beautiful earth

It was time to lay the burden down, unload my weary heart
So that I may walk in love and hope, before my soul departs
The whispers that had beckoned me,I know now were my own
The strength inside, the will to love,so I'll not be alone

I picked some wildflowers, placed them before the blonde gum tree
Bowed my head and said a prayer for all the souls who came to me
Back on the dusty outback stretch,of dirt between two towns
I walked for them, myself and love,my heart light and unabound

Wow. Welcome to YPDC.

I must say, it's really nice to see a new poet who is this talented. You have a great way with words that leads to a great story-telling ability and some fabulous imagery.

I shall definitely be checking back here.
