Our complexion, culture and custom may greatly vary;
We share one thing in common-love for fellow humans,
That runs in our blood, whatever be our racial roots.
In an alien land, you slip and fall down the pavement,
An unknown face comes to you, outstretching his arm.
On your train journey, a cute baby seated next to you,
Looks at you for a while and smiles with all innocence,
You smile back, not bothered about her racial appearance.
An elderly lady was about to fall while climbing the bus,
On the other day, you hurriedly propped her from falling,
Not for a moment you thought about her racial origin.
When there was a news flash about a terrible plane crash,
You were moved; prayed for the souls of unknown victims.
Seeing the visuals of gory sights of gruesome bomb blasts,
Greatly shocked and upset, you silently cried in your heart.
We are strongly bonded by our mutual love and concern,
Hate not a person for his racial or cultural background,
What ever is our race and in which ever country we live,
All of us feel the pain when fellow humans suffer.
Foster universal brotherhood and shed parochial attitude.
Can’t we together build a peaceful and promising world,
Free from agonizing wars, disturbing racial clashes,
Ever rising acts of terrorism and unabated violence?
“Yes, We Can”

* I gratefully acknowledge the usage of the slogan “Yes, we can” -a popular slogan of the election speech of the Honourable US President Barack Obama- as the title of this poem.
