He Had To Go

Grief

Seeing you in that crisp, blue suit
Made the tears come back as you put on your boots
You said "Don't cry"; held my face in your hands
"It's only a few months, can't you understand
That I have to go...
Won't you miss me so?"
I saw you off, that summer day
As your plane took of, I cried and waved
Praying silently on my long drive home
Trying hard to keep a heart of stone
You had to go...
Like the winds blow.
I received the news on a windy autumn day
Dropped the glass in my hand as I heard them say
No this can't be happening to me and you
You can't be gone, no it can't be true!
You said you had to go
But not for forever, no!!
Your casket can't be in front of my eyes
You can't be dead; we never said our goodbyes
I love you my dear, and I won't forget
Having you for a few years, I won't regret
You had to go, now I understand
But I still remember my face in your hands...

A heart wrenching piece. My loudest cheers and humblest gratitude to each person who serves as defenders of our freedom.
