I sat on the ground and looked up at her, astounded by her beauty.
"Why did you hit me?" I asked, but she only smiled and laughed.
She flew on angel's wings into the clouds.

I wandered the earth looking for signs of her, but the beams of the sun were hidden in the misty sky.
I sat in windy fields until I caught a glimpse of her as she passed by in the tall grass.
I thought it was her, though I could only see her back.
I sighed and sat waiting for her return.
She passed by again, and I saw her face—what joy filled my heart!
Alas, her gaze did not fall upon me, and I watched as she spread her feathery wings, ascending again into the brilliant sky.

Melissa, why have you pierced my heart with your arrows?
You drew your golden bow, and you hit me in the head with a baseball bat.

I tried to catch this beautiful angel, with greed in my heart and with selfish love in my blind eyes.
One day I caught hold of her fair ankle as she flew into the sky.
She smiled at me with a tear in her eye.
I watched it fall from her face—it hit me on my chest, and my heart shattered.
I fell from the heavens and plummeted into the depths of the earth.

I groped my way across endless fields until I reached a lake in the bottom of a valley.
Looking into the dark waters, I saw my reflection and gasped in dismay, for in my reflection I saw a horrible demon.
I tore my robes and poured dust upon my head.
I climbed to the tallest hill and sat under an apple tree, and the skies were rent with my terrible cries.
"What have I done?" I shouted with hands raised to heaven.
"Why have I hurt the one that I love?"

I mourned my sin as I walked the earth.
Rain fell upon my head, and I wept bitterly through the days.
My selfishness mocked me, and I learned to hate what I had been.
I looked to the skies and pleaded for forgiveness, but no winged creature made appearance.
I climbed the snow-capped mountains where the clouds make their homes.
I looked all about but saw no angelic maiden.

I returned to the fields and walked on dirt roads, and there I found Melissa.
She had no wings and no baseball bat.
She looked at me and smiled.
She spoke to me like a person speaks.
"You're a person just like me!" I whispered, and the scales fell from my eyes.

We said our goodbyes, and I turned and walked along the dirt road.
There was much I needed to learn, and there was hope in the sky as the sun cast beams of warm light upon my skin.
I will see you again after I have walked this path, Melissa.
