That knows not where to sail.
It lingers in such wretched water;
In midnight fog,
It dwells…
And like the song the wolf shall sing
To the tranquil moon at night…
Oh hear my soul cry out in pain
For just a glimpse of light.

Oh see my tears, oh hold my soul
And cast me not away
For I am on this stubborn path
To find that better day
That whispers in the precious words
Of those who comfort me,
But if their hearts could only know
I see not what they see.

They speak as if they sail upon
The sacred sea, Serene--
As if the world has joy and laughs.
I only hear the screams.
They can see the smiling faces,
And eyes so full of cheer.
I too have seen so many eyes,
I'm forced to count their tears.

What more have they to say to me….?
I wonder as they speak.
What more have I to give this world….?
I wonder as I seek.
I will not say it is a lie,
Sweet light, you must exist
And those who try to comfort me
Have found what I have missed.

Tell me, Hope, where have you gone?
When shall I see your face?
Where are you in the midnight fog…?
This sad and lonely place?
Tell me, do you see that ship?
That drifting ship is me!
I do not know just where to sail,
In this cold and wretched sea!

They tell me I can see you here,
Your grace shall never leave—
And though I am the drifting ship,
Still, I must believe,
And even as I sing my song
Of sorrow and of gloom
Even darkness may know the light
As the night sky does the moon.

In the darkness, I must sail on
Though drifting, I may be
In the darkness, I must go on
And go on, faithfully.
This wretched water is not my end
Though, yes, it causes pain.
This wretched water has not my ship,
My soul, it cannot claim.
