And meet me halfway…
It’s more than a job to me but they don’t see it that way.
When you are a teacher and work with kids day in and day out....
You feel their pain as if it were your own child’s pain.
These children come to you with their fears and their problems.
Most of the times you don’t know what to tell these kids,
How to comfort them given the circumstances;
You can’t begin to imagine what it must be like for them.
Last Friday evening seven men were shot in a local bar close to our school.
Four of them have died so far and the others are in a critical way.
One of them has a ten year old daughter at our school.
She has not slept since Friday…
Another is devastated because it is a member of her family
who is responsible for the murders.
What can you tell this child to quell her fears??
You know whatever you tell them would never be enough
But you help them by listening…
It’s the least you can do.
You let them know that you are there for them if they need to talk.
You get trained counselors to talk to them.
You try your best to make them feel safe at school
It is the only sanctuary they know.
And then you come home and cry…
Cry for these kids who have so much more to bear than they should.
You cry because you know the gang warfare is no closer to an end…
And your family asks….why are you crying?
Go figure!!!

Jen,
this made me cry to read. It is such a sad thing when the children are put into these whirlwinds of emotion at such a young age. Bless your heart for being the caring woman that you are. I understand and do relate to the way you feel as far as the family part really not getting it.

You keep right on being the person you are sweet Jenny. You are making positive impacts on those children and years later they are going to remember you for the love and understanding that you give.

Hugs
Michelle

the person that you are, those kindnesses you show, will go futher in their lives than you know, someday they will look back and remember the hard times-and the one sweet shining light in their life that kept their heart warm through those storms.... and they will be able to help another.

blessings, love and hugs, nessa

It certainly doesn't sound like an easy task that you have to undertake, how strong you must be mentally to have to try and mend lives torn apart with comforting words.
Then to have to come home and try to be yourself..........it's no wonder those tears flow, how many could cope with that stress everyday ?.
I hope your family read this and understand where you are coming from

Steve

It takes a caring soul to deal with such situations in a delicate way. they know you love them and would do whatever you could do to keep them safe. Feel free to vent as much as you need to. Our ears and hearts are here for you Jenni.
