I feel it grind within my teeth as I bite
A memory resides of my love's warm embrace
Can almost hear the laughter of my kids' delight

The sun's bright light covers the furthest horizon
Blinding my vision and slowly roasting my flesh
Her beauty is but a dream for me to lay my eyes on
She is my strength but what ends the pain in my chest

With my love for humanity the reason I'm here is clear
But I can't help but ask why as my body becomes cold
The sight of my blood upon the sand gives me no fear
But to say goodbye would be worth more than any gold

I cling to my chest as everything around becomes dark
I try to hold my last breath and wonder about my life
Random images in my head, I wonder where I'll embark
As my final breath escapes the last picture is my wife [comments] => 12 [counter] => 236 [topic] => 25 [informant] => InfamousG [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 15 [ratings] => 3 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => MiscPoems )

A wonderful soldier's poem. Very gritty and touching as well. I feel I'm in harm's way with you, walking beside you through the burning desert. Sobering poem. Very poignant. I thank all our soldiers for their bravery, professionalism and skill. God bless you.
