Don’t want it bad enough to starve,
to sit in a booth in some bar, or
makeshift meeting hall slash auditorium
waiting to read my latest.
Applaud those I can’t stand, but I know for a fact
are sleeping with the enemy.
(Publishers & editors of poetry magazines)
No doubt I will end my life with a few
fireproof storage boxes filled with poems,
alphabetized according to first lines,
crossed referenced by subject matter
stained by beer & wine bottles rested on them,
stored under my bed.
I don’t want it bad enough to watch what I say,
cross all my Tee’s not use the word nigger,
change this to that, kiss ass, smile for the cameras,
explain what I meant, have it ready on time,
send it airmail special delivery.
Don’t want it bad enough not to laugh at
‘crippled ladies in high heels’.
