And it is the hardest
Everything I conceal I pour out onto my canvas
No im not talented with a brush
Charcoal never gets the point across
Oils never worked in my favor
My canvas is a piece of paper
My tool is a pen
I am an artist
I might not be the finest
My drawings may not please you
But I do not write my pieces of art for you
I write to relieve
I write to portray an emotion, an idea
I write to tell a story
This is my art

Very nicely done...
Indeed, you have to please yourself with art before it can please anyone else....
Keep up the good work..

Welcome to YPDC!

A wonderful proclamation. Many of us (artists) get a lot of disdain from the rest of the world due to our pretentiousness (all of us have it, this is no lie). Yet I think you hit the nail on the head when you explain "I do not write my pieces for you. I write to relieve. I write to portray and emotion, an idea." This is what many, many (damn just too damn many) people do not understand.

When we speak about our art (whether it be a painting, photograph, poem, novel, wood carving, film, story, etc.) we are not writing for anyone. We are writing for ourselves. We share these things (when we do) because most of us are very quiet about it at first. (It took me 10 years to share any of my poetry....any of it). Yet at some point we want to know if these ideas, these feelings, these musings have any merit or if we are just lost within our own worlds. It is at that moment when we begin getting silly labels.

People often say "Well I don't know art, but I know what I like". That's wonderful, but an artist isn't asking anyone to like a damn thing. They are just displaying something to feel human, period. We are born to create and we have no choice. It's not something any of us can willingly put down.

This is a perfect declaration to begin what I hope will be a long stay here on YPDC. I promise you ideas like these will help you feel at home. We need more "artists" on the front lines fighting for that cause, that purpose. To say DAMMIT I AM AN ARTIST!

BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!

Thank you so much! You explain it very well.
You took my simple words and got so much out of them, exactly as I hoped.

Indeed, for some it does take a long time to even share with someone their artwork. Even here, on this site, most of us share our poems, stories, emotions, anonymously.
10 years? Well, I'm glad you've shared! I look forward to reading your poems.

I do hope to stay a part of this site for a long time.
Thank you, again
Jessi

(And thank you all for welcoming me to this site, and for the lovely comments.)
