[title] => The Case of Burning Brides

[hometext] =>
[bodytext] => The billowing smoke and the rising flames, Down there in a nondescript home on the narrow street, Draw a large gathering; Horrified, they watch the inferno helplessly. Swiftly arrive a few fire tenders, And put out the fire after a relentless fight. A wailing siren is heard distantly, And soon a police van appears; Wading thru’ the swelling crowd, it stops. A few men in uniform descend and hurriedly Enter the house in shambles; embers strewn all over And the smell of burnt flesh overpowering. Force open the bolted kitchen door And, there……………………. They are terribly shaken by The gory sight of a half burnt body of a young woman. A newly married one, a neighbour in the crowd whispered. The nagging husband, the pestering in-laws And harrowing harassment to bring in more money, The cause for this tragedy, some lamented. Deep rooted, the social evil of dowry Has come to stay, defying all efforts to curb it. Marriage for some is money making business, Where without investment, they earn a fortune, By deftly moving the vulnerable brides as pawns, To checkmate their impoverished in-laws. More homes are turned into gas fired crematoriums. The laws are there in voluminous, hard bound books, And the overburdened courts are there, Struggling to dispense justice of cases pending over years. The perpetuators of this heinous crime are rarely punished, The conniving and corrupt police invariably on their side. ‘Lack of evidence’ or ‘benefit of doubt’ comes handy, To the rescue of these human parasites. FIRs filed mostly under the pressure of human rights watchdogs; It may drag on for long years, ‘fore final verdict is delivered. By that time the tormented soul of the victim Would eventually reconcile to its inexorable fate. When this evil, a blot to the civilized society, will end? Until then, here and there and now and then, The heart-rending cries of burning brides, Will keep reverberating in our ears.
