[bodytext] => I think that we will redact The prickly cactus Among news— The green-moneyed idols With their fallacious flowers. The pictures are big and bright, But the text is squinty, spurious At a certain slant, glinting Conspiratorially— Sharp as needles. I see men bribed and poked, Made stamps by the sun. Made flat and heat-agreeable. Petals festoon the green miles Of callous plant, fibrous, Tough as hide—Direct route to heaven. The mission is all there (noble reporting). The headlines straightforward. But occasionally, a three-pronged attack: Adjective-Noun-Verb, And that pitchfork of a cactus— Arms and head parallel— Is Hell’s cruel allusion. Reams of yellow feathers Sparge a site. Finches deign to the Earth— Desert their coin-slot, thumbnail Roman bathhouses. Snakes ruffle a few feathers: Fat-Cat-Wins! Red-Devil-Surrenders!
