Watching my team play
Sure I coach now
But it wasn’t always that way
I used to be out there
Driving to the basket, one on one
Counting down the minutes
Until practice was done
But here I am standing
After a broken ankle
And four screws in my knee
I only should have predicted
That a basketball career was over for me
As I stand here yelling
Whistle in hand
Now I've traded places
I'm the one in command
I watch them carry out drills
They drop a pass, I make them run
Now, don’t get to tired
Practice has only begun
But the damage is done, I start to think back
To long afternoons,
And time spent on the track
Then there's only one word that
Then comes to mind
Suicides
The one thing I’m happy that I left behind
Running on the court
From line to line
And even worse
That running was timed
Our Practice is flowing
They hustle so everything is fine
But then I see them get lazy
So, everyone on the baseline
That’s right here you go
You guys are gunna run some more
Yeah, I feel your pain
Don’t forget I’ve done this before
The coaches before me
They demanded perfection
I didn’t understand
But now I’ve made the connection
Striving for excellence
It’s all you want for your team
You have to push for the best
And surpass even extreme
Exceed all expectations
You could go has far as insane
But that’s what it takes
If you want to master this game
You better bring your all
When you step on my court
Cuz if you don’t have the heart
I suggest you find a new sport
It’s only worth it if you love it
To fuel the passion within
You have to deal with exhaustion
But it’s worth it when you win.
So yeah I can admit, standing here watching my team
That coaching may never be the same
But whether I’m a player or a coach
Basketball will always be my game.

Poetry is much like a great photo, a single "moment in time" capturing many feelings and emotions. Yet, they are very alive; creating stirrings within the readers who form visual "pictures" of the expressed emotions within the Poem. ©
