A Soldier’s Story

I’m sorry that I waited, to tell you today
You see, my orders were cut early on yesterday
So it’s your pardon, that I beg of you please
But our whole battalion will be shipping overseas

In two weeks time we shall all be deployed
And by sniper fire once more, we shall all be annoyed
But we will step lightly down this dusty road
These twenty-seven soldiers here within my patrol

Comprised of those from all walks of life
It is for any of them, that I’d lay down my life
For whether from a distance, or in a hand to hand fight
It’s right there beside me, that they’ll share my plight

Although many are seasoned, the same as near me
We have been incorporated, with a few new rookies
But they will all learn, and quite fast you should know
In this theater of danger, how quick one must grow

Then there are the times, here inside my flak-vest
I reach for that picture, stored there against my chest
And with every free moment, that I possibly can find
I look at this picture, to free up my mind

Then I dream of the burgers, the milkshakes and fries
And the sweet apple pie that would light up my eyes
But mostly how much, that my little girl has grown
God please walk beside me, and guide me back home

This was amazing...I dont think that I could have done much better...I did 5 years in the Marines....1997-2002...and although I never saw any time over there...there are times that I still wish that I could go back and do my part, because I have lost friends over there that I served with and sometimes there is this feeling deep inside of me that beleves that if I was still in that I could still make a difference. But I have a family that I must also take care of like I help in doing for this country.....But let me just say once again that you did an amazing job....GREAT WRITE.

Rich

This is an incredible piece, and a wonderful ode. Way to be able to see things so clearly from another's point of view. Well done.

wonderful...great imagination and emotional empathy. i think most officers in the armed forces can relate to this...i no this is a serious poem but i found this line kinda funny "Then I dream of the burgers, the milkshakes and fries
And the sweet apple pie that would light up my eyes" (i think i'm just hungry haha) again, impressive stuff. keep it goin. take care
