Today I mourn the loss of a great mentor and friend
Never did anyone think this is how his life would end
Through many years of service in the public eye
He brought me back to earth when I started to fly too high

Guiding me through the early years of my firefighting career
When ever I started to go astray, if I looked around he would be near
Helping me to deal with the dangerous situations that we would face
Reminding me that we must remember the reason we are in this place

He showed me that my best abilities were in search and rescue
Working beside him I looked at fires with a new up-close view
The events that would bring his life to a close
Well, no one could predict those

The other night just about three
The alarm sounded waking everyone but me
My mentor saw I was not there to ride
So on the truck he stood on my side

A drunk driver did not hear the siren wail
So to apply his brakes he did fail
It should have been me that died that night
Nothing could ever make this right

It turned out the call was a false alarm
Some kid did not realize he could cause such harm
How can I say Good-bye to you my friend?
How could your life have come to this end?

Oh this is heartbreaking. You took such a painful subject and wrote a brilliant write. This pain at times stays with us doesn't it? I am so sorry this happened to you.

huge hugs

Michelle

I have to agree that this is heartbreaking...I am so sorry for your loss...but you have taken such a tragic event and however sad and painful and made a beautiful poem...
Once again I am sorry...

Rich
