The Power of Touch

Soft breaths from a sleeping baby, held gently to your cheek
The sudden dampness that is felt, when their diaper springs a leak
The prickly feeling of whiskers, when your father hugs you tight
That warm all-over feeling you get, when mom kisses you goodnight

Then there is that special touch, when your lover takes your hand
You know the one I’m talking of, the one you can barely stand
It’s followed by a precious kiss, that seems to melt your heart
But most important in this verse, you’re one of the two parts

And here there is a handshake, which also says it too
This is a touch that means so much, and just wants to thank you
A special hug from someone, that is given when we’re sad
For it’s not nearly quite the same, as that given when we’re glad

The cozy warming of a fire, on a cold harsh winter’s night
The warmth from a hot chocolate, that has filled us with delight
The feel of a warm towel, taken freshly from the dryer
And then there are those certain songs, sung sweet by a church choir

A sudden grasp at a child’s hand, when they need be put in check
The scarf that’s thick and made of wool, pulled tight about your neck
And a sloppy wet kiss you will receive, here now at this days’ end
This one’s from your happy dog, who just wants to be your friend

Sea-spray blown from the ocean side, when standing on the shore
The sting of a wind-driven rain, let loose by a downpour
And then there are the elderly, their outlook sometimes bleak
The thank you that is in the eyes, when lips just cannot speak

These facts that I have cited, are not meant merely to cajole
They should not only touch your heart, but also touch your soul
For there are so many touches, that few are mentioned here
It’s that special power of touch, which is seldom felt through tears
