Array ( [sid] => 141396 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => LOVE IS FOREVER [time] => 2008-04-05 16:12:44 [hometext] => This poem is based on a true event when I was about 10 or 11. The man became a friend of our family till he died some years later. [bodytext] => The girl sat on the edge of the jetty
Watching the old man in the boat below
As he pulled up the ropes hanging in the water
The old man looked up at her and smiled

What’s your name girl, he asked quietly
Rikki sir, was the girl’s tentative reply
Why you watching me, the old man asked
Cos I like watching people, the girl replied

The young girl watched the man pull the boat ashore
Then slowly walked over to the old man
Can I give you a hand with those buckets
The young girl asked with interest

Why, do you think I’m too old, he replied
There are three buckets and you only have two hands
The young girl replied with a cheerful grin
Then picked up a bucket and followed the old man

The young girl sat and watched silently
As the old man slowly made a pot of tea
You’re the first visitor I’ve had in years
So you have my best tin cup, he said with a grin

My name is James, the old man told her
Then the young girl sat and listened as he talked
Telling stories of his youth and life
Fascinated by the wonderful life he had lived

It was almost dark when at last she got home
Her mother listened as she told her of the old man
Then she sat and told her what she know of him
For he was a sad but well known character

He had not long been married to a beautiful girl
When she was hit and killed by a drunk driver
In a fit anger, rage and sorrow he lost control
He hit the driver so hard that he killed him

He went to gaol for many years for that
Since he’s been out he keeps to himself
A poor lonely man with no family or friends
Just be careful for he has an awful temper

That night she thought of what had been said
Of her mother’s words and those of the old man
She felt rather saddened by what she had heard
For no one should have to live without a family

In the morning she told her mother
That he wanted to be the old man’s friend
So could he have an extra sandwich in her lunch
And would she cut a nice flower for her to take

She hurried eagerly off down to the river
Hoping to see the old man once more
She found him sitting on the back step
Enjoying the warmth of the morning sun

She offered the old man the neatly wrapped package
What is this, the old man asked
A present from me to you, the young girl said
It’s only a sandwich but it’s all I have

And this is to put beside the picture of your wife
The young girl said as she handed him the rose
Tears welled up in the old man’s eyes
Then for the first time in years he cried

As they sat and slowly drank their tea
The old man started to tell her of is life
Of the beautiful girl he met and made his wife
You see, when you love a person it is forever

Whether she is standing by your side
Or looking down on you from heaven
Her love will always be with you
So just remember that love is forever

That young girl has now grown up
With a life of her own to make and live
But has never forgotten the old man’s words
She prays that she will find a love that is forever
