Array ( [sid] => 140501 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Freedom's Song [time] => 2008-02-20 09:00:34 [hometext] => A poem I wrote about the history of Blacks' struggles in this country from slavery to the Civil Rights Movement. [bodytext] => Since we came on the beach in chains and locks
We thought we’d seen our future smashed on the rocks
But then God sent an angel with a song,
One that would prove the racists’ words to be wrong.
The masters swung their whips and ripped off our backs
They wanted to keep us forever bound
Then that angel opened her mouth and she sang
And the racists asked “what is that sound?”
It was the sound of Freedom’s song
It was loud and so strong that it echoed for years
Freedom sang to show slaves that it wouldn’t be long
Before they were all free and wouldn’t have to cry anymore tears

Many years after slaves were released
We still had chains attached to our arms
Yes we were let go, but we still weren’t free
Jim Crow kept all of us in constant harm.
Then one day, Jim saw a little boy
The boy was happy but he was also black
Jim swung his ax and left the boy destroyed
And at that moment, Freedom came back.
And Freedom sang louder than ever before
She had to wake the world from it’s sleep
And she said “you can’t let this happen anymore,
You’ve got to act now, and one day there will be peace.”

Mamie heard the song and she spoke to the world
She showed them her boy, and they were all shocked
Then it was Rosa who let the song be heard
She took a stand while sitting and she would not be rocked.
Martin and Malcolm shouted it to the mountain tops
And one by one, we all sang along
Freedom sang, and her voice would not be stopped
Until Jim Crow packed his bags and walked along.
Freedom’s song was heard on every coast and all shores
By the Little Rock Nine who starred in Jim’s face
Not even a bomb in the house of the Lord
Could separate Freedom from the black race.

Things are much different now. We are finally free
and Jim is long gone, never to return
And all the victims are in Heaven, forever in peace
This is the reward that we all have earned
We could've stayed defeated, but we wouldn't stay down,
The bigots shouted curses, but each of them were wrong
And now there’s lots of equality to go around
All thanks to an angel named Freedom, and her very special song.

I agree with EM, it brought tears to my eyes.
In sadness and in happiness. You wrote this tenderly and with a lot of feeling. Nicely done.
