you fell in love with me
cold fingers intertwined,
a shared blanket.
closer than friends
should be,
easily blamed on
lack of sleep,
excuses made.

I remember that night,
2 AM, on the phone
some summer night.
gathered up my courage,
asked you out.
You turned me down,
unsure of your place
on the orientation spectrum.

I remember that night,
so much like the first,
except this one ending
with my confused outburst of
“I can’t do this!”
Feigning sleep,
couldn’t face your tears.

I remember that night,
talking on the phone,
“You asked me out?”
“I would have said yes.”
Regretful.
circumstances change.
now I’m the one that’s scared.

I remember that night,
after hearing of the revelation
that is your new girlfriend.
boiling with jealousy,
hard to sleep that night.

I remember those nights,
talking late
hours pass,
only to fall asleep
to the sound of your breathing.

I remember yesterday,
touching you
every chance I got,
couldn’t be too blatantly obvious.

Now, hating what I’ve done,
put her through enough,
put yourself through too much.
pain, confusion, feeling,
resurfacing.
