[time] => 2007-11-27 20:00:42 [hometext] => This poem is based on the information provided by the former Indian President Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam in the form of slide show, on water crisis that could arise in 2070. I gratefully acknowledge his work. [bodytext] => I am a Martian on my second visit
To the planet Earth,
Where Nature has showcased
Her charm lavishly and splendidly.
The snow-capped lofty mountains,
The lush green valleys, the meandering rivers,
Oceans of vast expanse, silvery cascades,
Extensive green forests,
Wide flora and fauna in abundance,
Enthralled and fascinated me on my last visit.
I come again to revel in Nature’s glory.
As I hover over the Earth closely,
I am shocked to see the sight below.
Is it the Earth, I had visited last?
Have I entered some other planet wrongly?
The lofty mountains sans snow,
Dried up water bodies, the denuded forests,
Barren and parched lands,
Presented a disgusting spectacle.
Savagely molested,
Alas! The Nature lost her pristine glory.
Parking my space vehicle at a desolate place,
Slipping into a special garment,
That makes me invisible to others,
I explore the once beautiful Earth.
I move into a crowded busy downtown,
Horrified to see people, weak and fragile
Wrinkles on their face, depressed in spirits,
Looking twice older than they really are.
Oh! What a heart rendering sight it is?
Dismayed by the scenario, I walk further,
A long queue over there draws my attention,
A queue for food grains, oil, or fuel?
Excited I am, as I move closely,
The queue, I discover painfully,
Is for water, a mere half a glass per head.
Water scarcity is the cause for this misery,
I come to know in utter disbelief.
As I walk down thoughtfully,
I come across a few young women,
Their shaven heads drooped,
Wearing disposable clothing,
Presenting a comical display.
Desperate measures,
To conserve water, I believe.
In my sojourn of surcharged emotion,
I gather distressing information.
Bath is conveniently given up,
Towels with mineral oils
To clean their stinking bodies
Is their innovative solution!
Synthetic food is what they mostly eat.
Starved of water, plagued by chronic diseases,
Their life span is reduced to a woeful 35 years.
Protected under the ventilated zones,
The air is rationed and priced.
The defaulters, sent out of the zone, mercilessly.
The depletion of ozone layer, the erratic seasons,
The alarming rise in global temperature,
Further added to their sufferings,
Making life miserable and burdensome.
The birth of deformed babies,
The impaired intellectual capacity,
Are other grave and serious problems.
I am moved by the plight of the humans.
My thoughts are suddenly disturbed;
I hear people shouting frantically,
And running here and there.
At a distance I can see a vehicle,
Surrounded by gun wielding masked men.
The terrorist? Planning to ‘hijack’ the vehicle?
Is the vehicle loaded with some treasure?
When I move closer, I burst out laughing.
The vehicle is a water tanker after all,
Meant for public distribution.
Such is the severity of water scarcity!
Greatly disappointed and dejected,
I wind up my unpleasant journey.
Why this catastrophe to the Earth, I mused.
The humans have to blame themselves,
For this deplorable situation, I concluded.
Their failure to protect the environment,
Not with standing the repeated warnings,
Is the cause for this grave situation.
As my vehicle zoomed towards my home,
The pestering question in my mind is,
How long the Earth will survive?
Well, the impending doom is not far away,
Should the environmental degradation continue.
May God save the planet Earth.
