To the pagan god of safe passage and suitcase longevity
The temple of the now must be pacified, appeased by simplistic ritual
Where it was written nobody knows, set down perhaps on mystic paper scrap.

Sheets to be lain upon by nobody must be changed
This is the first rule, a law irreversible, completely without question
Pondering the absurdity not dared by mere mortals
Brainwashed, accepting fate with pillowcase in hand

Hoovering up the crumbs in a house no-one will visit
Yet the irony of striving for a purpose to achieve
Making it look lived in, deception carefully planned
To the detail of the family, calling to water the plants

Subsisting on meagre rations, creative on refrigerated bounty
To buy more would be folly, it would only be squandered
Questioning the illogical, can dessert be made from broccoli ?
How long will this bread last, what if the milk turns sour ?

The final days are focused to the journey looming close
Check the money, check the tickets and the passport once again
Pray for the joyful day when the picture will be renewed
When the face will look more lifelike, not a remnant of the past

The hour is close when the last minute becomes the forgotten
Did we buy enough new underwear, did we pack enough clothes ?
For the 14 nights that lie ahead, everything crossed off the list

Guilty as charged, I am. I water the plants before leaving on a two day business trip even -- regardless of the fact that I wouldn't have watered them if I had been home for those couple days. I should be so diligent about putting oil in my car, LOL.

Good write - definitely relatable. I'm just going to ignore the fact that it seems to suggest I'm a bit loopy though. : )
