Of course you are the honeysuckle,
Immense, alluring,
You radiate light and sweetness
As others radiate hate.
It may interest you to hear
That I am a rifling brown butterfly,
Common in these parts,
One among many.
Welcome, welcome, you draw us in.
You are not the flame for the moth,
Nor the ruby wine for the drunkard,
You are, unquestionably, the honeysuckle,
And all things mellow and benign.
We cluster round you
To bask in the ripe, golden lustre
So freely bestowed upon us.
In return we can only give our attentions,
A small cost for such rewards.
Compared, I will always be the butterfly,
A pleasing subject,
If somewhat
Lowly.
I do not expect any more.
Does the fuchsia adore the hummingbird it feeds?
Is the rose the sweetheart of the honey bee?
In short, my dear,
Can the honeysuckle love the butterfly?
It little matters. We both know
You will flourish,
And I will be amongst the crowds again
Next summer.

Reguardless of the insperation i enjoyed reading this lovely poem, very airy and child like and yet wonderfuly romantic as well as

I'm not even sure I can comment intelligently here...
This is excellent, poet. I imagine it to be (hoping you don't mind me suggesting as much) how Robert Browning felt when he penned his first letter to Elizabeth Barrett after having read her book of poems. Ah, indeed - there is the art, but there is, too, the essence of the poet on the page! There is a rather magical thing that sometimes happens when the reader reaches through the poem and finds the poet waiting there.
I adore how you presented this. From your metaphors to the tone and style and to the fabulous essence of this - it's entirely wonderful! I wish, really, that I had written it. I celebrate you, for having done so!!
Oh and, Dom? Never once did I see a butterfly that I'd call "lowly". They're rather like people, I think - each glorious, in and of themself, regardless of their color. In my humble opinion, neither butterflies or people should forget that they were made to soar... lest they spend all their time on the ground wishing they could.

Oh, my dearest Dom .... what a masterful beauty! Your mention of Charlotte Brontë just made this all the more
wondrous to me, (if even possible). I adore the works of the sisters, though I am more familiarized with Emily. Such
a tragic fate befell them all ...
but to this brilliant piece. I am not surprised, upon reading it, of the inspiration. It has so much quiet and
innocent romance swimming all through it! And I can't imagine you as a more lovely creature than that of the
graceful butterfly, drifting into your honeysuckle, whose heart is always smiling and open to receive greetings.
Wow. I am literally floored by this! It is incredibly unique and yet, still reminds me of something I forgot.

| I have always been guided by the visual presence of the butterfly. When ever it is fluttering about or symbolicly displayed I always know I am in the right place at the right time. So it is now as I read this...absolutely the right place and time. This is a truly fantastic piece of work...touching my heart with special flutter power of the most beautiful of words reflecting how all things in life need and depend on each other.Bravo.... |
