I took her over to Hudson’s on Woodward Avenue. She wanted to be a flapper. I wasn’t sure business secretaries were flappers.
" Just tonight, Big Al. I want to do the Charleston at the Graystone’s and I have to have the right dress. I won’t wear it in the office."
" What about your hair."
" Oh, I’ll have it bobbed with finger waves. That’s all the razmataz this year. It’ll look cute in the office. Come on, sugar daddy, let me be a flapper tonight."
"Let me see the dress."
" I think it’s upstairs in the women department. I just know there’s got to be the prettiest red dress up there for me."
We went upstair. A sales lady came asking what she should show the young lady.
Jean spoke before I could get a word in edgewise.
" I want to see something red that popular. Something with a helm about an inch above my knee."
" I have just the thing."
The sales lady came back with a dress on a hanger. It looked skimpy, but I kind of liked it.
Jean smiled at me. "Can I try it on?"
" Well, go ahead."
When she got back her whole appearance was changed. She stood before me like something I’d seen on manikins in store windows and more and more on the streets.
The sales lady spoke. "This is our fringe layer dress and matching feather head piece. I thought you might want to see the head piece with the dress. There are other accessories that go with it."
" Like what."
"Beads, gloves, long cigarette holder, black fishnet stockings, red feather boa."
" Do you sell those here?’
" Yes, and they’ll look so very sharp on her."
" Please, daddy. Let me try them on."
" I gave it a long thought. " You’d wear it just for tonight. You can’t wear that dress and other stuff in the office."
" No, just tonight. Please daddy." she pleaded. "Buy it all for me. Please, daddy."
It was hard to say no. I gave it another long thought and finally winked yes at the clerk.
The clerk broke out in a smile that would have done her pretty in a Ziegfeld line. She led Jean away. I waited. After some time they came back, Jean in her regular dress carrying all the new stuff in her hands. With a honey sweet,"Thank you, daddy.,"she gave me a quick kiss on the cheek.
I took back the two hundred dollars I had given her earlier and paid the bill. We left the store. It was eight o’clock when we got back to the hotel after having her platinum hair bobbed.

Wonderful story... I could very well visualize it.

FRANCO.
