My Battered Half

This room is dark and empty.
Save the soul that huddles there.
He tries to melt into the shadows
just as cold and just as bare.

He’s been told “It doesn’t matter.”
He’s been told he shouldn’t care,
and that no amount of wishing
ever solidified a prayer.

He’s been beaten down,
dragged through the mud,
left for dead, and crucified.

He’s been auctioned off
to pay the rent, at least a
hundred thousand times.

Spent his whole life on his knees,
one quick look reveals the scars.
Wears the night just like a blanket,
though he’s never seen the stars.

If the eyes are portals to the soul,
his windows would be barred.
Should you get a look inside,
more than his knees are marred.

He tries his best to remain
unnoticed, regardless
of the gaff.

Though every now and then
I see him, for he is

my battered half.

Naz,
again your words reach right to my soul.
I have not a favorite part because the entire write is so soulful and meaningful.

Hopes all is well your way

~Michelle~

Woooooooooooooo, nice!
I am intriged by the rhyme and sceme itself. It works very well!
As to the content....I can't help but see that battered half in other places than just this piece

Naz, This is a very poignant write. I think a few of us have those battered halves, for purposes of learning, I suppose. All the trials and tribulations of life may batter us, but in return the skin toughens. Enjoyed the read, Scott. Thank you for sharing.
Much peace and hugs,
Laura

Great write Naz....
My battered half
now my bettered half.
How well we wear our inner pain.
This has such beauty as it certainly hits my heart strings.

Touching and poignant, I think I have a battered half. Its easy to keep this part of yourself locked away and neglected whilst the rest of you carries on as normal, not tapping into the pain and sadness that is so often just hidden away.

Very thought-provoking,

Dom

Snazzy, the first time I read this ... I was shaken. Seriously shaken.

I have been back a few times to shake myself again and DAMN, Scotty. This
is one potent piece. There is a "battered half" in all of us, methinks, that just
keeps getting tucked away and pushed down (quieted, if you will) until one
day it has suffered enough and breaks free

...then, I guess for us poets .. it arrives on a page such as this.

There is a human feel to this that is unlike much else I've read from
you. Not that your other work isn't "human", but in this one .. I
dont' know .. it's somehow more raw. Real, honest, raw human
emotion. And it's damn fine writing snaz. (Never do I ever have a
doubt that it will be)

loved the piece ... it's comforting in an odd sort of way.
