I enter the portals of my great Alma mater excitedly,
This very moment, a feeling of nostalgia consumed me readily.
Four decades passed by, since I had left this place half heartedly,
It was here I was initiated to the world of wisdom devotedly.

I see a gathering there, in a lively conversation,
And bursting into thunderous laughter very often.
With their girl friends, a few seated on the stairs,
Chatting animatedly, oblivious of mundane affairs.

And some squatted on the lush green lawn over there,
Engrossed in studies, unmindful of noise, elsewhere.
This drama in campus, enacted every year, over and over;
The ‘actors’ change, but this thematic scene changes never.

I now move into the lecture room, the pulsating academic womb,
Where we were nourished, to make the dormant self in us to bloom.
After a period of time, we were delivered into the world as matured,
By our dedicated teachers, who made our future safe and secured.

I stealthily enter the library, which I visited very regularly,
Not for reading alone, nor to search for reference seriously;
It was a silent but vibrant zone, a fashion show of beauties,
A favourite, enticing place, frequented by the dashing buddies.

I move by the gorgeous hall, the center stage of all action,
Where students displayed their talents, to every one’s admiration.
The open quadrangle there, where held the historic convocation,
Conferring upon us degrees, a memorable day of great jubilation.

The jocund company of my friends I recall with great happiness,
We cherished every moment in the campus; a treasure, priceless.
Never did we know what grief and suffering, in life really meant,
Fun and gaiety always marked those happy days, together we spent.

Any learning centre is like a mother, bestowing utmost care,
Grooming and equipping us with ‘tools’ to challenges dare.
Up bringing us to face the complex world with confidence,
Guiding us to make our mark and lead a life full of fragrance.

I n our long journey of life, full of vagaries and prosaic,
This leg of journey is hurdle free; it is evergreen music.
Recollected in tranquility, it is refreshing and enjoyable,
Unique is this experience; it is by all means incomparable.

Now I turn back to say adieu to this edifice of knowledge,
That I lead a meaningful life, ‘cause of you, I acknowledge.
‘Students may come and students may go; but I go on for ever’,
Rightly is your motto; purse this noble service with great vigour.

* I gratefully acknowledge the modified usage of the following lines:
‘For men may come and men may go,
But I go on for ever’
From the poem, ‘ The Brook’, By Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Mr. Mohan,
Fantastic!!
'Fantastic' is the only word that describes your narration. It zoomed me to my college days... Well done and i wish, i were so prolific.

An excellent reminiscence that evoked my memory lane where the Library is also a sharply charged environment. Most enjoyable and thank you for sharing this here.

Well Done

Peace
