when you feel like hell.
when the words of sweetness
come out like vomit;
smelling of last night's brandy
and you sound like a verbal slut
spewing about abandon and regret.

but you smile...

the music in your head,
no one else hears.
the rythym and smoky jazz bar beats
that you swing to alone,
mixing with the sound of the ice clinking
in your empty drink
and the sound of the neighbors'
love making,
fighting,
being alive,
being half-dead.

but you smile...

it's all noise
and sometimes it's better than silence.

sometimes it's hard to breath
when the air around you makes it unmanageable
and you've swallowed the insufficient
amount of air this place had to offer.
you gasp for more
but more is not allowed.
your idealism-
killed by the workplace,
by the checks that bounce,
by the compounding worries of adulthood-
motherhood.

but you smile...

what else can you do
with so many
watching,
cheering
for your defeat;
your self annihilation? [comments] => 3 [counter] => 193 [topic] => 21 [informant] => priss [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 10 [ratings] => 2 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => Lifepoems )

Thats brilliant, I think we all put on a brave face and smile through but sometimes inside your screaming thats when you need a really good friend to vent your feelings, can relate to this so much. xxxxx

priss .. this was a wonderful introspective view of the
turmoil we suffer, when we feel one way but must act
another. I love that one line repeated throughout.
It is quietly powerful.

Excellent post ~

Tumultuous. Hmmm. Haven't used that compliment in a while. This did contain quite a bit a turmoil. Very nicely described turmoil ... scarily nice.
