Array ( [sid] => 130709 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => THE INTERNET [time] => 2007-01-18 15:40:22 [hometext] => Does this ring ANY BELLS with ANYONE? .................. I WONDER [bodytext] => THE INTERNET

1995 and a knock upon the door,
I open it to find a box, just the one, no more.
I sign the piece of paper, I drag the box inside.
I struggle past the furniture, the path is not too wide.

If only I knew then tho..... just exactly what I know now?
Would I have been so excited then? and if so wonder how?
I waited til my husband,..... came home from work that day.
To open up said box for me,.... for us to have a play

Once put up and working, modem set and all.
One full pound per minute, was the cost of every call
Not like fellow Americans, or Canadians access FREE
We had to pay the full amount per min.... a 100p!

Eventually the chat lines I found... and I had a chat
Nothing in particular, we talked of this and that
I spoke with folk from Brighton, from Portsmouth and from York
I spoke to the Americans and learned to talk the TALK!

Then as time went on..... I couldn't wait to see.....
All my new found friends..... that sit and talk with me.
Imagine having so many "FRIENDS" not moving from your home?
What relief to those that hadn't any?..... and lived upon their own?

Not long till I'm addicted, down the stairs the crack of dawn.
There with all my other friends... we type, drink coffee,
We are suffering from the same illness... this addiction to this box
None of us admit it tho, as time races by.... tick tocks

First I see my husband off... and shove him out the door
I quickly peak thru window, check hes gone for sure!
He hates me on my new found toy, he hates I have new friends
He tries to spend more time with ME and tries to make amends

But my PC is my new found friend, and opens up doors anew
but also closes other doors.... between guess?... yes.... us TWO
My PC and my new friends here, they help me to escape
No longer do I sit with him and watch the STAR TREK tape!

My Father becomes very ill, he doesn't have long to go
I log on to the internet, to be with friends I know
We talk and soon I discover, they too have parents ill
They have lost their loved ones and it isn't long until....

Our chats become a counselling, a bond that becomes very strong
People that were complete strangers, now ask, how "you" .... are getting along
You find that they are "THERE" for you and you "THERE" for them too
You feel for what they do and say, Cheer them when they're blue

Some of us feel bonds so strong, we all agree to meet
People from all walks of life from North and South we greet
No longer just a screen name or a picture on pc
But actual human faces, bodies, true reality.......

Many many years pass, and my new friends still remain
We all catch up together, meet in London, via train
We laugh and talk of times when, the computer was our "WORLD"
Instead of with our "LOVED ONES" on the settee warm and curled

Is the internet so bad? if we don't abuse?
I think it was a GOD SEND I shall always use
Comminication is what we lack you see, in our tiny little worlds I say
If I hadn't found the internet I'd not be here today!

And now I hope new friends to make, whilst writing all these thoughts
So already the said INTERNET has new friends to me brought
I appreciate your reading this, and love so much your comments too
I bid you all good afternoon and send my love to you xxx [comments] => 3 [counter] => 194 [topic] => 43 [informant] => Malcolmsdreamgirl [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 5 [ratings] => 1 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => oops )

Bravo! I enjoyed this very much. We all can relate to this. Yes it opens up a world to us and it is a good thing if we aren't addicted.

Welcome to ypdc I will be looking for more of your work, you have a way with the pen!
