Now withered away by the finale of war
His medals and armour are wilted and old

Fifty years service and faith to The Man
To his squadron insignia he is bound
He walks through the fields of dawn-red poppies
And talks to his men underground

The shrill of his foe still rings in his ears
The march of the forces still burns his feet
His eyes glisten with the awful dreams
Of gunfire, smoke and his ill-fated fleet

The dawn light glows as the man in black
Stands saluting the memorial wall
There is one thing that keeps a smile on his face
Knowing he is a hero to us all

Here stands a man, a glint in his eye
Of past triumphs, fortune and gold
Now withered away by the finale of war
His medals and armour are wilted and old
