[hometext] => A peom written to criticise the racist views which were had about the aboriginals during the last century.
[bodytext] => “Joesphine, Joesphine, dinner’s ready, come here! How dare you
disobey me,” Her mother’s voice was near. Long shadows were cast on the dry, blood-coloured earth, Bringing to the evening a chilly nights curse, But Joesphine stayed with her native friend, Together in the wattle, they watched the long day end, They’d often play together, though it wasn’t allowed, Climbing, digging, having fun, She was an innocent eight-year-old child. Her head echoed with the taunts from the whites at school, But not even friends can be separated by rules, “Joesphine come here! Just you wait,” She could smell the cooked dinner, though it wasn’t that late, “Just you wait for your father, my dear child, This time your punishment will not be so mild” In the wattle they stayed, shiny, dirt-smeared faces, Two friends so close, yet from such different races, Her eyes were blue, her skin like milk, His were dark, black skin like silt, But though they were different, one black, one white, Their friendship was deep, much beyond just sight, The sun had set, the long day had ended, They departed from the tree, both befriended, She slipped through the back door, dirty and scratched, “Oh you wicked child! You’ve been with the blacks!” [comments] => 1 [counter] => 182 [topic] => 25 [informant] => CowgirlKid [notes] => [ihome] => 1 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 5 [ratings] => 1 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => MiscPoems )
