Let me tell you a little tale,
About a little boy and a wishing well.
With penny in hand, he quickly tossed,
In hopes this Christmas would not be a loss.
See, Billy didn’t wish for selfish things,
No bikes, or cars, or golden rings.
His only wish to come true,
Was a wish that only his mother knew.
For a year ago his father died,
And Billy and his mother were lost inside.
Happy days were hard to find,
Surviving was a daily grind.
As the penny hit the water, Billy made a wish,
As it splashed when it entered like a jumping fish.
“Let the tears no longer flow”,
Billy said, with eyes aglow.
He kicked a rock as he started to leave,
And prayed his wish he’d soon receive.
Mr. Johnson was walking by,
And saw a tear in Billy's eye.
“What’s wrong my son”, he simply said,
As Billy's face turned bright red.
“Nothing sir”, staring straight down,
Eyes glued to the distant ground.
“Then why so blue, why so sad”,
“Cause Mr. Johnson, I’m missing my dad.”
“Oh I see”, he gently said,
As he rubbed the hair on Billy’s head.
“Your daddy's spirit is here with you”,
“He lives in your heart, if you believe it true.”
A puzzled look was on Billy’s face,
Like all other thought had been erased.
Flying home to tell his mom,
He ran as fast as his feet could run.
“Daddy’s here”, he screamed out loud.
His voice could be heard above any crowd.
His mother came running to where he was,
To see what was all the buzz.
“Mr. Johnson said, that daddy's here”
“He communicated with us through our tears.”
“He has a home in our heart”,
“He’s been there from the very start.”
“Is that what he said?” as she pulled him close,
Knowing his hug was what she needed most.
“I think you’re right, I think he’s here”,
As both their faces were full of tears.
Billy went to bed that night no longer afraid to cry,
He felt closer to his dad when tears filled his eyes.
Suddenly the pain was a little easier to bear,
Now that he realized his father was here.
Morning came as the sun rose,
And Billy jumped from the bed on his toes.
He ran down the stairs mighty quick,
Even before the next second on the clock could tick.
Waiting for him by the Christmas tree,
Was a shiny present, wrapped beautifully.
To Billy, From Dad, was on the bow,
As Billy’s tears started to flow.

A Holiday Wish
