They called me.
They called me from the distant realm of sleep.
I got up. I walked down to the living room window.
There they were.
A soft golden globular glow hovered over the pond in my front yard.
Others were weaving in and out of the trees across the street.
I put on my jacket and boots and noiselessly crept outside to explore this spectacular sight.

Like will o’ the wisps they came.
They called me.
They called me outside with silent voices.
They sang to me in a tone not heard by others. I was mesmerized by their song.
They kept calling me closer. Closer.
And I stepped lightly, even in my clunky boots, through the grass.
Closer. Closer.
I could barely think for myself. They were so beautiful.

Like will o’ the wisps they came.
They called me.
They called me to them and I followed.
The one hovering above the pond zipped away, past my face, with a wind behind it that almost stole my breath from me.
It appeared much larger up close.
The glowing orb beckoned me. ‘Follow, follow’ it said. It spoke no words and made no gestures but somehow I knew.
So I followed.
Across the street, the others ceased their ritual dance through the trees.

Like will o’ the wisps they came.
They called me.
They called me down to the pond and I stood next to it.
Though it was windy, I was not cold.
Though they were pushing me toward the water, I was not afraid.
They sang a quiet baptismal song as I stepped down into the icy pool of water, oblivious to anything but them.
They gently trickled water over my head.
Then they formed a circle of golden globes around me. And they danced.

Like will o’ the wisps they came.
They called me.
They called me in a language not known to man. But somehow, I understood.
They danced faster and faster around me until they became a single ring of light.
They lifted me off the ground, into the sky, into the stars. And I saw the beauty of the world around me.
They took me to an open field and put me down.
They left me there and flew off.

Like will o’ the wisps they came.
They called me.
They called me from my warm bed out to this cold field.
I could do nothing but wait.
I sat down.
I became tired.
I laid down. I fell asleep.
When I awoke it was 3 AM and still dark, but I was back in my bed at home.
But, HE was there.
They had answered my wishes and now the man of my dreams stood before me.
He smiled and I hoped it wasn’t a dream.
But later, when it was light out and I was roused from sleep, he was still there, sleeping peacefully beside me.

Like will o’ the wisps they came.
They called me.
They called me to let me know they had heard my wishes.
And now they made them come true.

How I love those will o’ the wisps. [comments] => 1 [counter] => 194 [topic] => 18 [informant] => Cupid [notes] => [ihome] => 0 [alanguage] => english [acomm] => 0 [haspoll] => 0 [pollID] => 0 [score] => 0 [ratings] => 0 [editpoem] => 1 [associated] => [topicname] => Holiday Poetry )
