Traveled to the Pacific today.
My very first time...
(two oceans and a gulf under my belt now).
Walking down the boulevard
I could smell that salty smell
I could see the ocean
in the breeze.

There she was laying out before me
in all her raging glory;
deep greenish blue colored water
white foaming waves breaking
at the sandy shore.

My feet meet
and sink
in the warm sand,
it is inviting to those
who have been tethered in shoes.
Tiny grains lodge between naked toes.

Strange plant pieces lie about
on this vast expanse of beach.
Seaweed.
Seagulls snack on
long leaves, moss green in color.
Bladders filled with air
buoyant they no longer are.
Stipes twist around my ankles
as I step out
into the cool water.

Waves come crashing,
splashing up to my knees,
flowing inward
then as quickly again
begins to ebb.
Receding water with flecks
of gold sparkling
in the Autumn afternoon sun.

I see the seashells
that were carried in
and left behind;
some still following the wave
back out to the wide expanse of blue.
Tanned hands reach to catch them...
delicate hues of
purple, pink, and pearl.

Out of the corner
of my eye I see a white
orb shaped shell
fluttering like a butterfly
in the hydrosphere
A sand dollar;
fascinating this was once
a living animal.
Now this test
a treasure for
human hands to hold.

I am smiling
Venerated with Mother Earth.
This beach
this place
I shall oft remember fondly...

Warm Autumn Day at the Pacific
absorbing the ocean view.

My oh my.... I brushed the grains from the sole...I like reading the flow of your narrative. I sense it is from a deep combination of internal dialogue and monolgue in balance at having and feeling your own awe. These are not words meant for the concert halls nor the bathroom stalls but god what if they were...forgive the vulgar but i just fell into this unedited but ya know how people decorate with shells and curtains of foam and mist.
If I were a mountain hermit monk this would be the Ocean Sutra. I would print each word over and over till every inch of my flesh was covered and protected by the embrace of your inner nature through these words. Deadheadpoet tattoed I bow to you.

Blessed Be
AJPIII

Laura, you have got this pitch-perfect. I just felt myself in the midst of it all, atonal sounds, briney smells and sand between the toes. Just wonderful.

Talk about being "swept up in the moment" ; )

I knew I was in for a good read just by the title! I love the ocean --- well pretty much any open body of water does it for me, but an ocean even more so : ) This piece is wonderfully descriptive, and as a reader I was transferred there, so thank you! This part in particular summed up the beach scene for me perfectly:

My feet meet
and sink
in the warm sand,
it is inviting to those
who have been tethered in shoes.
Tiny grains lodge between naked toes.

Great work Laura!

Aw..this poem is so sweet. It makes me wish that I didn't live in Minnesota...
But its nice to be treated with the ocean on occasion.
Through this poem I can see myself at this beach.

Wow, I have always had an affinity [another like characteristic between my mum and I] towards water, though I also have a great fear and respect towards water. To me it seems like it is about an equal balance which those who are wise such as my mother tell me will keep me safe. Anywho the segment:
"I see the seashells
that were carried in
and left behind;
some still following the wave
back out to the wide expanse of blue.
Tanned hands reach to catch them...
delicate hues of
purple, pink, and pearl."
Was very important to me considering the last time I was at the ocean I was with my mum and sister Lump, my sister and I having spent a good amount of time collecting interesting sea specimens made this a beautiful reminder...
[sorry for the long comment]
