Array ( [sid] => 127167 [catid] => 1 [aid] => mick [title] => Aberfan [time] => 2006-10-20 03:32:23 [hometext] => In memory of all those who died in the Aberfan disaster October 21st 1966. 116 children and 28 adults lost their lives, when coal slurry slipped down a hill and onto the school and houses below. Lest we forget. [bodytext] => Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Suffer the children to come unto me,
How prolific now those words seem to be,
In Aberfan these words came to be,
When darkness swamped this village you see,

The coal waste slipped down from the hill,
And onto the school that waste did spill,
No chance for them who were inside,
And on that day that village died,

The half term was one day away,
But tragedy came to Aberfan that day,
It shocked everyone across the nation,
As that village lost a whole generation,

Just after the morning school bell rang,
All things bright and beautiful the children sang,
Then a rumble was heard, and the world stood still,
As the dark coal slurry came down from that hill,

It engulfed the classrooms with mighty force,
Death and destruction became its course,
No chance for those, that were trapped inside,
144 people that day did die,

116 young children were taken that day,
No more will we see them chat and play,
28 adults they were taken as well,
The day Aberfan heard the cold death knell,

So 40 years on, have we learnt a lesson,
For the tragedy of this will not lessen,
For man himself he was to blame,
If only, now fills them with shame,

So October 21st 1966,
Is in our mind so deeply fixed,
We now know more than way back then,
So lets make sure it never happens again,

So with these thoughts of young and old,
Who's lives were struck down in this toll,
For that village, the pain still burns like an ember,
And Aberfan, we must always remember

My Friend Sue,

You painted a dark picture with "Aberfan"...
One that I had never seen nor heard...
I thak you for the fantastic poem...
Now I shall remember...

Bill

I remember it well, and there has been a tv documentary since the anniversary claiming that pit bosses knew how dangerous the slag heap was before the disaster struck.

A nice tribute Sue, a whole generation wiped out in a small village, a day of darkness not just for Wales but for the whole of the UK, lest we forget. The darkness of the time comes back in your words.

Commemorative poetry, especially for tragedies, always has an inherent power, especially to put your own relatively minor problems into perspective. Thanks for that.
