Are They not human?

Maybe They are
and I...
I am just an alien
living in a strange world
of evil walkers.
For I cannot fathom
Their cruelty,
Their massive amounts of
inhumanity.

I am not one of Them.
Those that pleasure Themselves
at causing pain
for another brother
or sister.

What has happened
to the mind
of the fellow walkers of this
earthly realm?

I fear for my brothers,
some who's souls are
so full of hate.
Ah..... of this I wish
I could
Emancipate.

I'm with you... I hope you still look at this world with shock.. It is quite amazing how the masses can be.
I have a mate how thinks as I do - very much like this piece - who is full of frustration because of it. He can't understand why I can keep calm. Being angry means you're no better. The only way you make the world any better is being calm, offering a hand and doing whatever you can to make the lives of the people around you better - in the hope they carry it with them to others.
Loved this piece, obviously.
From one 'alien' to another - great write ;-)

- Tim

I don't know if you've been to What A Line of late, but if you have - you may already know that my mind has been in a similar place since watching a documentary on public television last night. Reality... overwhelms me sometimes. It would be easy enough (easier) to go rent some movie with a happy ending or watch some mindless program on the television --- but a dose of reality is sometimes necessary regardless of how painful it is to bear. It... keeps us rooted, makes us more human, I think.

This piece strikes an already raw nerve. I don't mean to sound like I wish I hadn't read it - rather, that I'm glad I did. In truth, I find it impossible to reconcile some things in this world... what you're referencing here, what I saw in that documentary last night, what I witnessed in the National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis back in '99 (which, after six years of struggling with it, finally spilled out in On Going Home)... but whether it makes any sense at all to me, it is part of a history that none of us can or should turn our eyes away from. Tragic, awful, unreconcileable history. It breaks my heart but it makes no sense (and is a disservice to those who have or do suffer, I believe) to pretend it doesn't exist.

This moves me, Laura... as does your decision to write and share it. I do so understand the inclination to refer to yourself in such a way as to clearly distinguish yourself and your thoughts from the hate - but I'd argue, dear Laura... that this piece doesn't make me see you as alien - it is the opposite really. It makes me see as you as incredibly, wonderfully human.

Again impressed,
~Snemmy

I'm so happy that you shared this. I must agree with you I loved the way you used alien in it sooooooo fitting! I often feel the same way. The realm of reality hitting one in the face really stings at times, I get really torked off about it too!! Great write sis!

  • Oooh, I love how honest and straightforward this is.

My favourite stanza would have to be the last.
I'm not sure exactly why, maybe because it seems so
'free' yet still within the limits of portraying rhyme and rhythm.

I definitely agree with Snemmy up there^^, though,
the fact that you feel that you are alien only makes you
possibly more human. The ones that don't
see anything is wrong and just keep living are those
    that are alien. Kinda.

    Heh, thankies for sharing though.
    Definitely a thought-provoking write.

I too, have to agree with my fellow commentors. I do not see you as an 'alien', but rather a kind and caring human being. It's so sad when hate consumes some of us. A most thought provoking write you have here. Well done and thanks so much for sharing it with us.
    take care
    love, hugs n prayers,
    Sue M
