Abby, Abby

Contributed by Rakerman1999 on Friday, 13th October 2006 @ 11:26:08 PM in AEST
Topic: MiscPoems

Abby, Abby, in the middle
Promised much but given little
Toss the fool a token bone
This is all she's ever known
Sleepless nights and endless days
Hope is lost within a haze
Change the rules and make her cry
Abby wishes she could die

Abby, Abby, cant you see?
This is what was meant to be
Call it luck or call it fate
Either way it's far too late
Set in stone, the die is cast
How much longer can you last?
Cursed for all these many years
Doomed to shed a million tears

Abby, Abby, on a ledge
Inching closer to the edge
One more time unto the brink
Torn and tired and cannot think
Takes a look and takes the leap
Falling down into the deep
Then, at last her soul might know
Peace upon the rocks below

L. Carling c2006

This makes me think of nursery rhymes and childrens' songs (bear with me Lar - I mean that in the best of ways). As kids, we learn to recite them unthinkingly... ring around the rosey - pocket full of posies - ashes, ashes - we all fall down. Then... somewhere along the line... in the middle of repeating one of these morbid concoctions... suddenly we realize that the words are actually rather dark and, when considered more fully, outright chilling. An internet search or two later, the rhyme's historical context can be found and one realizes that, in this example, they've been dancing about while singing of a horrid plague, its effects and its eventual toll on its victims. Dancing about... with their beloved children... singing about death. It's.... deeply disturbing really. At the same time though - it, now in context, is somehow potent and moving and undeniably brilliant in its simple, morbid presentation. In the end, it's the sort of thing one can spend a great deal of time pondering but not be able to draw a conclusive decision about... is it horrid? or... strangely wonderful?

This.... your write... is somehow similar in my mind. I haven't, of course, any real understanding of what plagued dear Abby and no internet search is going to clue me in. And yet... I feel a strange sense of knowing... a relatability that I'm not quite certain I should dare to admit to. Sleepless nights, endless days... tearful times and hopeless ways... plunging further into the deep, desperate dreams in lieu of sleep ---- yeh... it all sounds rather familiar to me. Perhaps Abby's edge is a different one that mine... I couldn't know for certain... and because I can't, I'm at a loss to know whether wish her pulled back from it or delight in her falling. What I do know is this... the presentation here is brilliant. The reader that takes it at face value will find that it dances in their mind and/or on their tongue. And the one that considers potential context... even without knowing its true origin... will be blown away.

It's good to see you again, friend. I have missed your words.

just out of the hospital..glad to see a post from you but I would like something cheerful..lol. I think I'm falling off the ledge. I'm in terrible pain..I think I'll go back in Monday. If you get on...send me a get-well card :) hopefully I won't be on the ledge quite yet.......

I had to come back to this one a couple of times before leaving a few words of appreciation (I even tried to find a back story on the internet, to no avail).

Reading it again, I recognised the nursery rhyme, sing-song quality, used so refreshingly here in this sad and compassionate elegy. Just a pleasure to read, Larry.

Thank god it's Friday even if it is the 13th.

Perhaps we all have had the proverbial monkey on our back at one time or another. Is there anything that can set "Abby" free. or is she destined to a fordrawn negative fatal conclusion. Do we convince ourselves that there is no escape..."from the rocks below". Figularly speaking, perhaps we need to take the plunge at times....to surrender.

I may be way off on this one Larry, but it sure is a facinating and very skilled write. It is good to see you post another poem. I have always enjoyed your work.

Well done,

Will
