Wise, Weeping Willow

Oh wise, weeping willow,
What have you seen?
How many times has your world been serene?
Have you ever seen
A young soldier’s life
End prematurely in the face of a knife?
Have you ever seen
King Henry the Eighth
And men persecuted because of their faith?
Have you ever seen
The bourgeois rebel
And rich men subdue them and keep them in hell?
Oh, wise, weeping willow,
What have you seen?

Oh, wise, weeping willow
What have you heard
How many times has injustice occurred?
Have you ever heard
A young child sob
While working twelve hours at a factory job?
Have you ever heard
The funeral bells toll
While nobody prays for repose of his soul?
Have you ever heard
The Nuremburg knight
Incensed, homicidal but never contrite?
Oh, wise, weeping willow
What have you heard?

Oh, wise, weeping willow
What have you smelled
Have many times has hate overwhelmed?
Have you ever smelled
A hot rifle’s smoke
While Satan grins gayly in his black, hooded cloak?
Have you ever smelled
The stench of the dead,
Who’ve been left behind never getting ahead?
Have you ever smelled
The power plant’s fumes
Choking the flowers before they can bloom?
Oh, wise, weeping willow
What have you smelled?

Oh, wise, weeping willow
What do you think?
Is it par for the course or are we on the brink?
What do you think
Of the rich sipping wine
While billions of others are living like swine?
What do you think
Of the war in Iraq?
Children are leaving and some won’t come back.
What do you think
Of the atomic bomb?
One push of a button and the world will be gone.
Oh, wise, weeping willow
What do you think?

Oh, wise, weeping willow
Has this always been?
A world of turmoil and people of sin?
Has this always been
A world filled with lust?
No selfless actions and no one to trust?
Or is this all different?
Are we in too deep?
Is society crumbling on us while we sleep?
Oh, wise, weeping willow
Is this why you weep?

Damn, Bob would be proud of that write, man. Unbelievable how you went through so much of our history with that willow. I often wonder myself if the trees could speak our language...the tales they could tell. (I love the Ents from Tolkien's book...those were some damn fine trees there) Again, I love the write and all the feelings they came to me whilst reading it. A fan of your words.
Peace, Laura
