someone pounds on my door
my heart races as
I get up to answer
knowing that if I open the door
my world will change
forever

"I regret to bring you
this news, but your son
was in a car wreck
and he is gone"
Gone Gone Gone
echoes through my head
while my eyes stare
vacant and old

my heart turns numb like
an anesthetic to ward off the pain
if only for a while longer,
I turn cold and my legs
won't move, frozen solid
like the lake in full winter
knowing that spring won't
arrive to thaw this year

my mouth goes mute
frozen with a silent scream
never to be yelled
and my life, as it once was,
is gone, like my son,
forever

  • Well, I'm glad to hear that it didn't really happen to you.

Either way, though, you've portrayed the grief so vividly.

    *shudders*
    I can't ever imagine what it's like.

    Thanks for sharing this.

    Kat.
